BLACKPINK Listed on TIMES ‘100 NEXT’… First Time as a K-Pop Group
[연합뉴스=김효정 기자] Group BLACKPINK became the only K-Pop group to be listed on the ‘100 NEXT’ list, published for the first time this year by TIME magazine.
According to YG Entertainment and TIME on November 14, BLACKPINK was selected as one of the ‘TIME 100 NEXT’ this year.
‘TIME 100 NEXT’ is a list being published for the first time this year by TIME, the magazine that has been announcing lists such as the ‘100 Most Influential People’.
TIME explained the reasoning behind their selection by writing, “to spotlight 100 rising stars who are shaping the future of business, entertainment, sports, politics, science, health and more”.
BLACKPINK was included in the ‘Phenoms’ category of the list.
TIME wrote, “BLACKPINK may still be rising in the U.S., but on YouTube, it reigns supreme”. They also added, “BLACKPINK has 31 million subscribers on YouTube, more than any other music group in the world”.
They also mentioned that the group performed at ‘Coachella Festival’ for the first time as a K-Pop girl group and that their music video for ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ has recently surpassed 1 billion YouTube views.
TIME reviewed, “BLACKPINK’s success has been powered in part by a devoted legion of digitally savvy fans”.
The list included many prominent stars in addition to BLACKPINK, including Camila Cabello, Billie Eilish, and Ezra Miller.
TIME announced the list considering that with the rise of social media and due to many different factors, the essence of global influence is going through transformation.
TIME explained, “When we first published our TIME 100 list of the world’s most influential people 15 years ago, it was dominated by individuals who rose through traditional power structures”. They continued, “What has been striking about more recent editions is the growing number of individuals who did not need an establishment to command international attention”.
