[스포츠경향=김서영 기자] Group BLACKPINK took action to raise awareness on climate change.

On the UN Climate Change Conference(COP26) held on the 25th at the British Embassy in Seoul, BLACKPINK received a written letter from Boris Johnson, the prime minister of the UK. He celebrated BLACKPINK’s success and asked the group to join the UK in the COP26 to raise global awareness regarding climate change.

In his handwritten letter, Boris Johnson wrote, “Your recent video ‘Climate Action in Your Area #COP26’ was a huge success, being viewed over 10 million times across social media. Climate change is the most important issue of our generation” and thanked them by adding, “It is welcoming that you have decided to speak up for this critical issue.”

BLACKPINK asked, “The first step is for us to study about climate change. Since climate change affects everyone, we need to know what’s happening. We would like to learn more, and we hope our fans will join us”.

Simon Smith, the British Ambassador to Korea emphasized, “The British Embassy in Seoul is happy to be working with BLACKPINK and YG Entertainment on the COP26. We must act now to protect earth and our future generation. We hope the BLINK around the globe will join our journey as well”.

The video mentioned through the letter was produced by BLACKPINK and the British Embassy in Seoul, and was introduced through the Climate Ambition Summit 2020 held last year on December. Global leaders such as prime minister Boris Johnson, António Guterres, the secretary general of the UN, and president Moon Jae-in have participated in the online conference held by the UK, UN, and France.

BLACKPINK mentioned the need to preserve our planet’s natural habitat, which is disappearing at  a fast pace, while asking for the conservation of nature and raising awareness on climate change. They also emphasized the importance of the COP26 which will be hosted by the UK in November 2021.

Meanwhile, after completing their livestream concert ‘THE SHOW’, BLACKPINK is about to release their solo projects. The global fans are highly anticipating the projects after ROSÉ revealed her first performance of ‘GONE’, the sub-title track from her upcoming solo album.
