[TV Zoom-In] Seungri in “SNL”, Definitely the Best at Self-“Dis”
[TV리포트=이수아 기자] “Humor begins with “making fun of oneself.” “Self-Dis” comes from self-confidence. Only when a person is confident in himself, he can do “self-dis” and make fund of himself for fun. I thought it would be so much fun to appear in a show with such a person as host.” (Hee-Yeol Yoo’s interview on a day before he joined “SNL Korea”)
Seungri (birth name Seung-Hyeon Lee) shook the small screen with his “self-dis”. Definitely, in terms of “self-dis”, he is the best host of “SNL Korea” ever.
Seungri appeared in tvN channel’s live comedy show “SNL Korea” (CP Sang-Hui Ahn) as a host. He fascinated audience with his bold “self-dis” in different segments. He disclosed not only his sense of humor but also his sex appeal in the show.
He began with “self-dis”. He appeared as a conductor of an orchestra and said, “I have been constantly encouraging Big Bang’s members. I was worried about them but I told them to do it as their way, but I’m still worried. What if they fail?”
When comedian Se-Yoon Yoo, made up as G-Dragon, “dis”ed (short for “disrespect”) Seungri, saying “Other members are concerned about you. They call you XX”, he wittingly responded, “You are not the G-Dragon I know of.” Then, he “dis”ed himself once again by saying “At an SNL meeting, the producer told me, “Do it your way. There’s no problem since you know how it feels.” And I indeed know what the “feeling” is.”
He also displayed bold X-rated acting. It was indeed a bold performance which cannot be expected from an idol star. He formed boy band “Rice Cake Boys” with other actors of the show Seong-Ho Jeong and Min-Gyo Kim, and presented a shocking “Rice Cake dance”. He looked quite absorbed in that dirty dance which knew no time and place. He also performed a shocking “19 years and over” dance with Actress Clara. He was interested only in the dance and not in the actress, which created a hilarious scene.
Seungri also showed a great talent in comedy. He featured as an arrogant top star in segment named “Seunri’s Dignity” and proved his real ability. He cracked the audience up, acting as a fastuous top star who keeps saying “No problem”. Furthermore, his peculiar way of kissing with actress Clara surprised viewers as well as the actress. He even did not hesitate to expose his nipples for the show.
He also tried “eating broadcasting” in the show. In another feature “Midnight Restaurant”, he competed against Dong-Yeop Shin, in an eating contest, to win the mind of the beautiful owner of the restaurant, Yoo-Ri Seo. When Dong-Yeop Shin ate nastily to evoke the girl’s sympathy, Seunri presented even nastier way of eating, to win the contest. He even drooled tomato juice out of his mouth.
After all, his boldness was highlighted in another segment “”Weekend Update”. His witty “self-dis” reached the peak there, by mentioning his dirty scandal which stirred a lot of controversy last year. Seungri acted as Hyeon-Seok Yang, the head of his agency YG Entertainment, to parody his own scandal.
Despite Sengri’s explanation, Hee-Yeol Yoo repeatedly mentioned the scandal. Eventually, Seunri jokingly choked Yoo, saying, “Seungri is not that kind of guy. He is very nice and tenderhearted.” (In September last year, Japanese weekly magazine “Friday” exposed Seungri’s privacy. The magazine published a photo of a sleeping man supposed to be Seungri, and a woman’s remark on him that he likes to choke woman on the bed.)
In the show, Seungri totally made fun of himself, which is the basis for any humor. He is the only “SNL host” ever, who sacrificed himself as such, for the sake of the show. He even parodied his own dirty scandal which was the biggest crisis for his entertainer career. Definitely, Seungri is the best “SNL” host with a sense of humor for “self-dis”.
“SNL Korea” is the original Korean version of American live TV show “Saturday Night Live”, which enjoyed a great popularity for 38 years. With main host Dong-Yeop Shin, who is called “god of dirty comedy”, SNL crew including comedian Se-Yoon Yoo, Sang-Hun Lee, Min-Gyo Kim, Seong-Ho Jeong, Myeong-Ok Jeong, Yeong-Mi Ahn, Yoori Seo, Hyeok-Su Gwon, Won-Ha Kim, actress Clara and singer Hee-Yeol Yoo create unique comedy with different star hosts who perform as cameo every week.
