PSY Releases Title Track “DADDY” in This Summer, Following “HANGOVER”
[엑스포츠뉴스=정희서 기자] Singer PSY’s new song “HANGOVER” has been finally unveiled. PSY has also announced the release of his new single and title track “DADDY” in this summer, following “HANGOVER”.
On the 9 this month at 8:15am, “HANGOVER” and its music video were disclosed on PSY’s official YouTube channel and YG’s official blog.
PSY’s new music video “HANGOVER” depicts Korea’s unique drinking culture comically, in line with the title itself. The video begins with PSY struggling with a toilet after sobering up and Snoop Dogg who is patting PSY on the back, which is a hilarious scene from the very beginning.
Then, PSY and Snoop Dogg eat instant cup noodles and hangover drink at a convenience store and visit sauna. As such, every detail of Korea’s unique hangover-relieving culture is shown in the video.
However, the story picks up its pace in earnest from the middle. PSY and Snoop Dogg go to a Chinese restaurant and pass a glass of soju (Korean liquor) from one to the other. Then, they make friends with middle-aged Korean women, to enjoy themselves singing passionately in karaoke room. Then, G-DRAGON comes in as a cameo, showing hilarious mike-holding skills.
Along with those scenes, the video depicts Korea’s unique drinking culture including making boilermaker through domino effect, drinking competition, and so-called “love shot”, which resonate with Koreans but look rather strange to foreigners. In the scene where PSY and Snoop Dogg engage in a drinking competition, 2NE1’s member CL makes a surprise appearance as a cameo, catching the eyes.
In line with the subject “hangover”, the ending of the music video show Snoop Dogg and PSY leaving the pub in a neat suit, after drinking overnight. Then, the street becomes a mess, with fight between drunkards.
In the preview video of “HANGOVER” which was released on the 6 this month, all the lyrics were in English, but interesting Korean lyrics appear in the video and music of “HANGVOER” that were newly disclosed. The Korean lyrics go “Can’t find you nightingale / If you’re not pretty, until you become pretty / Take the glass”.
Notably, unlike “Gangnam Style” and “Gentleman” to which melodic elements were added, “HANGOVER” puts its hip-hop style to the front in collaboration with “hip-hop icon” Snoop Dogg, to further appeal to the mainstream pop market. Meanwhile, PSY has also put some “Korean” colors in the song, by adding a melody that is created by Korean traditional musical instruments such as a Korean small gong, Korean double-headed drum, and a gong, expressing the unique character of the song. The repeated chorus “hangover” also gives the catchiness to the song, just like “Gangnam Style” and “Gentleman” did.
The lyrics of “HANGOVER” were written jointly by PSY and C.BROADUS (Snoop Dogg) and the melody was composed by PSY and Yoo Gun Hyung, who also composed “Gentleman”. Producer Cha Eun Taek directed the music video.
PSY sends a message that goes “’NEW SINGLE ‘DADDY’ COMING THIS SUMMER” at the end of “HANGOVER”’s music video, announcing that a new song will be disclosed soon. The message is further heightening expectations of not only Korean fans but also pop fans around the world.
Meanwhile, PSY’s new song “HANGOVER” will be exclusively released on iTunes of the United States and other countries on June 9 at 0 o’clock in Eastern Standard Time (June 9 at 1pm in Korean time)
