god, Beast, IU, TAEYANG, AKDONG MUSICIAN, WINNER receive 2 Awards
[OSEN=이혜린 기자] TAEYANG, IU, and god received Best Song, Album, Artist and of the Year Awards respectively at the 2014 Melon Music Award (MMA), which are considered the grand prizes of the ceremony.
The ceremony was held at Seoul Olympic Park’s Gymnastics Arena on Nov 13.
god’s “Chapter 8” received the Album of the Year award as all the songs garnered much popularity. Sohn Ho Young, after receiving the award, said in excitement, “What am I going to do with this?” and added, “I am very sad that I can’t share this happiness with the other members. This is a huge prize for us, thank you. We work for you, not for the prize. We will do our best so this can last.”
Denny Ahn commented, “It’s been so long since we received a big award like this. It was hard for us to unite, and I thank everyone who made it possible. We belong to different agencies now, but I am grateful for all the agencies and especially Taewoo, who worked so hard in reuniting us.”
IU received Artist of the Year award as so many of her songs were highly popular. She said, “2014 was a surprising year for me. I am an atheist, but I thought maybe there is god, and I was puzzled by my luck, and then I was scared that the luck almost seemed dangerous. But I am so grateful. I made people at my agency upset, and they probably had a hard time because I did everything I wanted to do. I am so grateful for all of them.”
TAEYANG received Best Song of the Year award with his “EYES, NOSE, LIPS.” He said, “I don’t know if I deserve such an amazing award. So many people helped me with my album and the song. I thank Mr YANG for having faith in me.”
The top 10 artists were determined 60% by the number of downloads (from 2013 Nov 15 to the date of the event) and 40% by streaming count. The 1st online voting was done for 30 teams (which accounted for 20%), and the music scores (80%) were added to that result to pick the top 10. And they were 2NE1, EXO, god, WINNER, Girl’s Day, Beast, Sistar, IU, AKDONG MUSICIAN and TAEYANG.
WINNER received New Artist award with their “EMPTY,” and the Hot Trend award went to Soyu X JunggiGo.
Dance group awards went to Block.B, Apink, MC the Max, and the folk category was awarded to AKDONG MUSICIAN, while R&B Soul went to Fly to the Sky. Rap and hip-hop went to San.E and Reina, Singer-songwriter’s award to Kim Do Hoon. Boasting a huge fan base, Beast won the award for Most Popular among Netizens. Lyn’s “My Destiny” on SBS drama won the OST award.
Beast, WINNER and AKDONG MUSICIAN won 2 awards each.
IU sang a few tracks to open the event while Soyu x JunggiGo showcased collaboration with Lee Guk Joo. San.E and Reina sang their song in a winter version.
WINNER’s “DON’T FLIRT” was showcased on the stage, and NAM TAEHYUN’s love scene on the bed attracted much attention. Block.B’s performance attracted attention as well while Sistar performed the alluring “Touch My Body” dressed in black leather outfits.
AKDONG MUSICIAN’s “GIVE LOVE” was portrayed in a story-book type while Beast showcased an incredible live performance.
However, the overall performances were not satisfactory. The stages were set beautifully, but a large portion of the artists were lip syncing while the cameras were filming unrelated scenes from time to time.
AKDONG MUSICIAN received the award on behalf of 2NE1, and EXO commented through a video screen. Denny Ahn and Sohn Ho Young were the only members to attend the event for god. Sohn commented, “I strongly feel that hard work always bears a fruit.”
They allocated extra time to mourn the death of Shin Hae Chul. Kim Sae Hwang commented, “Every word in his lyrics meant something, and he sang his youth and passion. He never compromised his music for anything. He fought for his music. So everyone here, be proud of your music. He will always be with us. Please remember him. I love you, Shin Hae Chul.”
Same was done of Lady’s Code, who received MBC Music Star Award.
Yoon Sang, Julian, Han Go Eun and other celebrities were on stage to hand the awards to the artists.
