1.2M Copies of BLACKPINK’s Official Debut Album Sold, ‘First-Ever Million Sellers in K-Pop Girl Group History’
[마이데일리=명희숙 기자] Over 1.2M copies of BLACKPINK’s official debut album ‘THE ALBUM’ were sold, allowing BLACKPINK to become the first-ever million sellers in K-Pop girl group history. The figures renewed the best·biggest records in K-Pop girl group history with dominant figures.
According to YG Entertainment on October 26, a total of 1,209,543 copies of BLACKPINK’s ‘THE ALBUM’ were sold. 871,355 copies were sold in Korea, while approximately 319,300 copies were sold in the US and in Europe. The 18,888 copies of the limited-edition LPs were sold out instantly.
An album by a K-Pop girl group have never surpassed 1M in sales. Even including the 1990s, before the physical albums market began to slow down in the 2000s, 760 thousand in sales was the biggest official record in K-Pop girl group history. BLACKPINK has literally reached a legendary figure, setting a milestone in K-Pop girl group history.
BLACKPINK’s ‘THE ALBUM’ has showed off its irreplaceable presence in various global song and album charts.
‘THE ALBUM’ topped iTunes Album charts in 57 different countries of the world after its release on October 2. The album, released in physical copies on the 6th, entered the US Billboard 200 and UK’s Official Albums chart as no. 2, renewing their own best record in K-Pop girl group history.
BLACKPINK’s album sales was also the TOP among all albums released by female groups in the US for the past 10 years. Billboard previously spotlighted BLACKPINK by writing, “’THE ALBUM’ being no. 2 on the first week of its release is the highest rank reached by girl groups since Danity Kane’s ‘Welcome to the Dollhouse’ released back in 2008”.
