10 Focuses, the Meaning of Exclusive Disclosure of PSY’s “HANGOVER” on iTunes

PSY will appear in American TV network ABC’s late-night talk show “Jimmy Kimmel’s Live: Game Night” with world-wide hip-hop musician Snoop Dogg, on June 8 at 7pm in Eastern time. In the show, the music video of “HANGOVER”, as well as talks and skit will be disclosed.
Immediately after the first disclosure in the live-broadcasted show on the day, “HANGOVER” will be disclosed on the official YouTube account. Then, on the 9 at 0 o’clock (on June 9 at 1 o’clock in Korean time), the music will be disclosed on the iTunes of the United States and the world exclusively. Korean listeners will be able to listen to “HANGOVER” by creating a separate account on foreign iTunes or through the music video disclosed on YouTube only. On domestic music-streaming websites, Korean music fans will be able to enjoy PSY’s new song only after the exclusive right of iTunes is expired. According to the contract terms, the time of the expiration of the exclusive right differs for different iTunes.
Such moves of PSY for his comeback demonstrate his evolved status in the global music scene. The exclusive disclosure on iTunes means that PSY has set the whole world as his target. This is also a direction for him to further establish himself as a global singer, not just a Korean singer. Since the new song is released after the record of “GANGNAM STYLE”’s reaching 2 billion views on YouTube on the 31 last month, its influence will be even bigger. Usually, only world-class singers release their new song exclusively on iTunes. In the past, world stars such as Daft Punk and Beyonce have released their new album in that way.
The first disclosure of the new song in an American talk show bears a significant meaning, too. In the United States, there are many live talk shows where musicians can promote their music directly, so many star musicians in the country disclose their music first time in such talk shows. PSY is also following the track, becoming a global singer, not just a K-Pop star.
According to Lee Se Hwan, a managing director at Sonny Music, “PSY has become a musician whom everyone in the world knows. The success of ‘GANGNAM STYLE’ was largely attributable to fun images or bonus, but the new music puts its focus on the music itself, with participation of Snoop Dogg”.
American hip-hop mogul Snoop Dogg featured for “HANGOVER”. PSY has already aroused a big interest in his new song earlier this year, by disclosing a snap shot taken at the shooting of the music video, with Snoop Dogg and BIGBANG’s G-DRAGON. PSY is to disclose the title track of his new album in this summer, after the disclosure of “HANGOVER”, on the 9 at midnight (in American time).
