[New Songs For Your Commute Home] All the Nine Songs in SECHSKIES’s New Album Deserve to be Title Songs, Showing SECHSKIES’s Experience and YG’s Trendiness
[OSEN=김은애 기자] The 20-year old group SECHSKIES has blended well in YG Entertainment. Now, the group is trendy as well as experienced. SECHSKIES has demonstrated that it can do a variety of music genres from ballad to pop and hip-hop, making it impossible not to fall for them.
SECHSKIES released their fifth album titled “ANOTHER LIGHT” at 6 PM on September 21. It’s the group’s first regular album after its fourth album “Com Back” in 1999.
SECHSKIES decided to name the album “ANOTHER LIGHT” to show that the album reflects the group’s new concept and its unique color and light. It also shows that SECHSKIES is trying to break its image of being the first-generation idol as well as the type of music they will be doing in the future.
In the past year, SECHSKIES has released only EPs that contain new songs and old songs. This time however, all the tracks in SECHSKIES’s new album are new songs. It has a total of nine tracks including “SOMETHING SPECIAL” and “SMILE” as title tracks as well as “NEED U”, “BACK HUG”, and “DRINKING PROBLEM”.
“SOMETHING SPECIAL” is written by YG’s new hit makers KANG UK JIN and LIØN and composed by KANG UK JIN, Diggy, and LIØN. It is an upbeat song with reggae and hip-hop elements and has warm lyrics about one’s beloved. SECHSKIES is trying something completely new with “SOMETHING SPECIAL” that is very different from their old style.
GDW was the director of the “SOMETHING SPECIAL” music video, in which SECHSKIES made a huge transformation. The music video is about couples that act the same although they are apart, something that many people can identify with. The symmetrical sets and unique camera angles make it more fun to watch.
The other title track “SMILE” is also the work of KANG UK JIN, Diggy, and LIØN. “SMILE” is a slow, sad but restrained song that accentuates SECHSKIES’s vocal skills. EUN JIWON mentioned that this is his favorite song in the album.
The lyrics of “SMILE” is about truly wanting that one person to smile for you when things are tough. SECHSKIES sings, “Yes. Smile for me so that I will be able to forget everything watching you. I want you to always smile for me. There’s no happiness in a place without you. When things get tough, you can rely on me. I just want to close my eyes and listen to your voice.”
The black-and-white music video for “SMILE” is directed by Han Sa Min, who has worked with BIGBANG and G-DRAGON. SECHSKIES look polished in the music video and captures the hearts of the girls. The high-speed action scenes make the music video more sophisticated, and KANG SUNGHOON and JANG SUWON’s crying scenes leave a strong impression.
YG artists helped making SECHSKIES’s new album. WINNER’s MINO and HOONY wrote the lyrics of “BACK HUG” along with EUN JIWON. TABLO wrote the lyrics and music of “DRINKING PROBLEM”.
SECHKIES is not just a first-generation idol any longer. It is just as current as any other idol groups of today. SECHSKIES has a really strong fan base too. Right before its comeback, SECHSKIES said that they feel like debuting again under YG. It will be interesting to see how well their fifth album, their first album in 18 years, will do on the charts.
