AKMU LEE SUHYUN, “First Solo Debut, Felt LEE CHAN HYUK’s Incredibleness… Feels Good to be in the Center Alone”
[스포츠조선=백지은 기자] AKMU LEE SUHYUN revealed her sibling chemistry with LEE CHAN HYUK.
LEE SUHYUN will release her first solo album ‘ALIEN’ on the 16th at 6 PM, beginning her first solo activities in 6 years after making debut. LEE SUHYUN has been working with LEE CHAN HYUK ever since SBS ‘K-Pop Star’ back in 2013. Since LEE CHAN HYUK has been in charge of creating music for AKMU, she must feel cherished to present her own music for the first time.
“I wondered how the public would feel, since I will be releasing my solo single in an odd concept which is different from what I’ve shown since debut. Since I had to decide things on my own before having meetings, I asked my brother for advice when I was unsure. He let me stand on my own, but always stood next to me so that he can hold me if I fall. That’s why I was able to make my challenge with confidence”.
LEE SUHYUN and LEE CHAN HYUK quarrel with each other through social media sometimes, but blood is thicker than water. LEE CHAN HYUK was the biggest supporter of his sister’s solo debut.
“When I asked what genre would fit me, he said I should try Pop. I always wanted to try a Pop genre song, so the song came out quick, but the problem was that it was Dance Pop. We listened to the arranged version of ‘ALIEN’ and worried, ‘What should we do? We should probably dance right to this one?’. So I practiced really hard, but I heard that he told others that my dancing is okay. I pretended like I didn’t hear it, but it felt good. My brother knowns what goes well with my voice, so I trusted him. I asked him to make a song that can be popular and emphasize my vocals, which came our really well. He came to the important shootings and sent snack trucks to support me”.
LEE SUHYUN is an artist with a pure, simple, yet impactful vocalist with unique charms. LEE CHAN HYUK is a smart producer who knows how to utilize her vocals, 200%. Was it not fearful to get outside of that comfort zone.
“This time, he said he’ll take care of the song with perfection and told me to do the other things by myself. That’s why I went to every meeting related to my solo activities and made decisions. I’ve participated meetings on AKMU as well, but I only made opinions and my brother made the decisions, but this time I had to do things by myself since my opinions were what mattered the most. I felt proud of myself. I also realized the incredibleness of my brother, who is responsible for many things when we make albums for AKMU”.
AKMU’s music captures the daily life stories and the trivial moments, add it with sentimental melodies and make the listeners feel empathy. How is it differentiated from the music of LEE SUHYUN as a solo artist.
“I wanted to be differentiated from the music and images people think when they hear AKMU. So I’ve made new challenges both musically and visually. It wasn’t my personal new challenge. ‘ALIEN’ is a song in a Dance Pop genre, which I liked and wanted to try myself sometime. I dyed my hair in mint, wore different contact lenses in every scene, although I never really wear contacts. The song even has a choreography from beginning to end, which was a big challenge for me. I want to communicate with music with my own character and uniqueness. The best part is that I am the only center! Has a lot of merit (laughter)”.
