BLACKPINK’s Debut Album ‘THE ALBUM’ Becomes the First Girl-Group Album to be ‘MILLION’ Certified by Gaon Charts

[서울경제=박준호 기자] Group BLACKPINK’s official debut album ‘THE ALBUM’ has surpassed 1M in sales in approximately 2 months since its release on October 6, and became the first girl group album to be certified ‘MILLION’ by Gaon Charts.

According to YG Entertainment(YG) on December 10, BLACKPINK’s ‘THE ALBUM’ has reached approximately 1.25M in sales based on the accumulation made by Gaon Charts. The album is BLACKPINK’s official debut album presented in 4 years since they’ve made debut which has surpassed over 1M in pre-orders, highly anticipated among fans even before its release. Actual sales have even reached 1.2M in approximately 20 days after the release of the album.

YG has explained that BLACKPINK has received positive reviews in and out of Korea for their active promotional activities this year. ‘THE ALBUM’ was ranked at no. 2 on the US Billboard 200 and UK’s Official Albums Chart on the first week of its release and has successfully charted in for 9 and 7 consecutive weeks, respectively. Billboard has ranked this album as no. 25 on the ‘2020 Best Albums 50’ selected by staff members of Billboard, while Rolling Stone also spotlighted the group by writing, “BLACKPINK has created a sensation in the US music industry’ on their article, the ‘Best Songs of 2020’. They’ve received the ‘Group of the Year’ award at the US ‘Variety Hitmakers’ for the first time as a K-Pop girl group, and also received the ‘Global Popular Group Award’ at the ‘Boom Boom Awards’ hosted by China’s QQ Music.
